Canton is a city located in Van Zandt County, Texas, USA. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,292. It is the county seat of Van Zandt County.
First Monday Trade Days
Canton is the home of First Monday Trade Days, held on the Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday before the first Monday of every month. It claims to be the oldest and biggest flea market in the United States. It is also reported that, due to its success, that Canton does not impose a city property tax on its citizens (the county and school district, however, do impose such a tax).
Splash Kingdom Family Waterpark and Party Castle is situated on 11 acres off I-20 and FM 859 in Canton, Texas. The seasonal waterpark includes a 17,000 sq. ft. wave pool, a 900 ft. lazy river, 2 tube slides, 2 body slides, a body bowl slide, a 7,000 sq. ft. children's pool featuring a play structure with 7 slides surrounded by interactive water toys, a food and beverage facility, cabanas for rental, and pavilions for private parties and events. The year round Family Entertainment Center (Party Castle) includes an indoor 3D glow-in-the-dark mini golf course, an arcade room, party rooms, a retail shop, and snack bar.
First Monday Trade Days began sometime in the 1850s. As was common in those days, the circuit judge would stop in certain areas on specific days to hold court sessions, whereby people came to town to see the court proceedings, and to conduct business. Canton's designated day was the first Monday of each month; thus the origin of the name. Despite numerous and repeated attempts by early city officials to discourage traders from doing business on the streets of the city, First Monday Trade Days continued and flourished.
Canton is one of the few places where the family still comes first and there is little fear of serious crime. The setting is beautifully wooded East Texas with lightly rolling hills, and the atmosphere is laid back. The people are family-oriented, genuine, and friendly. The schools and community are progressive.
Just over an hour from Dallas-Ft. Worth and within an hour of Tyler, Canton offers visitors numerous options for dining, entertainment, and lodging.
